CHIREDZI-BORN musician Peter Mathonsi, affectionately known as Dr Nzvedas, is making it big in South African showbiz. He is destined for greater heights.
Speaking to this reporter this week from his Johannesburg base, the 30-year old leader of Marhula genre outfit, Wendlati Sounds, is humbled by how his latest offering Ndlela ya Vutomi has made him a household name in South Africa.
Said Mathonsi. “Khomelela Hloko from my third and 2016 album is like a national song during many public shows and public transport. It is also doing well on national broadcaster SABC. The 2016 album follows Murhangi we Ndlela and Nzveda Nzveda of 2009 and 2012 respectively.”
The soft spoken singer believes that his magic lies in the humour contained in most of his songs. “People enjoy funny messages. One instrumental songs of mine has a possibility of being used as background track in one of the TV soap operas,” concluded Dr Nzvedas.
Mathonsi started music in 2004 with army outfit 4 Lions Band in 2004 in Masvingo. He left the group after his parents resisted his joining a band as a teenager. He returned to showbiz five years later sharing the stage with fellow Zim artistes like Liversy Matamba, Madala Boy and former Utakataka bassist Ronnie Mudhindo.
