CHECHECHE Growth Point in Chipinge south got a clean-up on Saturday June 25th 2016 during the commemoration of World Environment Day. Stakeholders who participated in the event include all government ministries, departments, local authority and non-governmental organisations who operate under the ENSURE banner.

World Environment day is observed worldwide on the fifth day of June each year since its inception in 1972. This year the day was commemorated under the theme: “Go Wild for Life – Save the Environment.”

The Checheche affair started with a street procession in the business centre. It was followed by a clean-up of the shops and the bus terminus. After the tidying exercise, people finally gathered at Checheche primary school grounds for speeches, dance and drama.

In his speech, the outgoing Chipinge District Administrator Mr Edgars Seenza who was the guest of honour, appealed to citizens to stop over-exploitation of natural resources. He urged communities to get involved and continue supporting conservation programs both at school and at home to ensure sustainable utilisation of the resources.

Said Mr Seenza: “Help end the illegal trade in wildlife. Illegal trade has facilitated poaching of wildlife using toxic chemicals such as cyanide. The illegal trade is impacting directly on the goals in addressing poverty, hunger, inequalities, economic growth, climate change, health and well being as well as peace and justice.”
